VISION Y MERCADO (Español & English)

Comenzando con el de más arriba, el alcalde Eduardo Esteban Polanco, junto a los que le acompañan en el Concejo Municipal y Alcaldía de Las Terrenas, como también con los aspirantes a la alcaldía, Randy Esteban Martinez, José Alexis Martínez, Mario Junior Anderson, Fernando Medina, además de los aspirantes a regidores conocidos, parecería que todos y todas han comprado la idea de que EL MERCADO determina el valor de sus posturas y aspiraciones políticas.
Cuando el mercado domina sólo los que tienen acceso al capital y se benefician de éste son los que determinan el futuro de las cosas y de las personas.
El "mercado" busca el mayor retorno a la inversión, con el menor gasto y a la mayor rapidez posible. Es, simplemente, una EXPLOTACIÓN para enriquecer más al que ya tiene capital. Por "explotación" entendemos el tratamiento de una persona como sólo un medio para un fin, o el tratamiento de un espacio (en este caso Las Terrenas) con fines puramente de ganancia económica de algunos.
Hay otras posibilidades, una de las cuales es invertir más en calidad de vida perdurable lo que, por razones obvias, requiere invertir en crear capacidad humana y preservar los recursos naturales para obtener sostenibilidad.
Porque un espacio, Las Terrenas, está lleno de gente que merecen calidad de vida en todos sus aspectos (vivienda, alimentación, salud, educación, trabajo, recreación, etc.).
Sostenibilidad es, someramente explicado, hacer lo que se vaya a hacer de tal forma que las generaciones futuras disfruten igual o mejor de lo que existe hoy. Para lograrlo hace falta equidad social y económica, al tiempo que se preservan y aumentan los recursos naturales.
La ausencia de planeamiento, como es el caso en Las Terrenas, es la puerta ancha del mercado, porque así explotan sin ton ni son. Eso es lo que ha mantenido el actual alcalde, para perjuicio del futuro sostenible en nuestro amenazado paraíso.
Por eso, en estos últimos tres años, la explotación ha llegado a niveles insostenibles, porque el alcalde se negó a empezar con planificación y porque él abrió aún más las puertas que dejaron abierta sus antecesores.
En estos momentos hay escasez de visión (porque el mercado nos llena los ojos y el corazón con cosas perecederas) y hay crisis de conocimiento porque ni leen, ni escuchan, ni exploran, ni reflexionan, ni aprenden de otros. Son ojos que sólo ven sus pies.
Pero lo más lamentable es que el ciudadano promedio es igualmente ciego, siendo guiado por otros ciegos y tuertos.
¿Dónde encontraremos la visión "utópica", quién tenemos que siembre ideales, dónde está la voz espiritual que clama en el desierto? Hoy, cuando nuestras circunstancias son extremas, la oferta es de más de lo mismo. "Donde no hay visión el pueblo perece" (Prov. 29:18).
La mejor predicción del futuro es el desempeño del pasado. ¿Será posible que los aspirantes a alcalde y a regidores se vayan por más de lo mismo?
Candidatos/as, abran sus ojos y espíritus, infórmense y aprendan, exploren y reflexionen, pero no sigan creyendo que lo qué hay y ha sido es lo único posible. Hay más y mejor y tú puedes ser el agente de cambio.

VISION AND MARKET
Starting with the one at the top, Mayor Eduardo Esteban Polanco, and those who accompany him on the Las Terrenas Municipal Council and Mayor's Office, as well as mayoral aspirants Randy Esteban Martinez, José Alexis Martínez, Mario Junior Anderson, Fernando Medina, as well as aspiring aldermen, it would seem that everyone has bought into the idea that THE MARKET determines the value of their political positions and aspirations.
When the market dominates, only those who have access to capital and benefit from it are the ones who determine the future of things and people.
The "market" seeks the highest return on investment, with the least expense and as quickly as possible. It is simply an EXPLOITATION to further enrich those who already have capital. By "exploitation" we understand the treatment of a person as only a means to an end, or the treatment of a space (in this case Las Terrenas) for the purely economic gain of some.
There are other possibilities, one of which is to invest more in enduring quality of life which, for obvious reasons, requires investing in building human capacity and preserving natural resources for sustainability.
Our space, Las Terrenas, is full of people who deserve quality of life in all its aspects (housing, food, health, education, work, recreation, etc.).
Sustainability is, briefly explained, doing what is going to be done in such a way that future generations enjoy the same or better than what exists today. Achieving this requires social and economic equity, while preserving and enhancing natural resources.
The absence of planning, as is the case in Las Terrenas, is the wide open door for the market, because that is how they exploit without rhyme or reason. That is what the current Mayor has maintained, to the detriment of the sustainable future in our threatened paradise.
For this reason, in the last three years, exploitation has reached unsustainable levels. The Mayor refused to start with proper planning and, instead, opened even wider the doors that his predecessors left open for those who want to exploit paradise.
Right now there is a lack of vision (because the market fills our eyes and hearts with perishable things) and there is a crisis of knowledge because they neither read, nor listen, nor explore, nor reflect, nor learn from others. They are eyes that only see their feet.
But the most unfortunate thing is that the average citizen is equally blind, being guided by others who are blind and one-eyed people.
Where will we find the "utopian" vision, who do we have to sow ideals, where is the spiritual voice crying out in the desert? Today, when our circumstances are extreme, the offer is more of the same. "Where there is no vision the people perish" (Prov. 29:18).
The best prediction of the future is the performance of the past. Is it possible that the candidates for Mayor and aldermen aspire for more of the same?
Candidates, open your eyes and spirits, seek out and learn, explore and reflect, but do not continue to believe that what is and has been is the only reality possible. There is more and better and you can be the agent of change.
